Welcome to Historic Trinity Lutheran Church, the Mother Church of Detroit Lutheranism and our Lutheran Cathedral in downtown Detroit, since 1850. Historic Trinity Cathedral is an ecclesiastical, cultural, community resource and gathering place for Metro Detroit. Historic Trinity is a National, State, and Local, historical designated site.

Easter, known as the Festival of Christ's Resurrection, is the oldest, greatest, and highest Feast of the Church Year. This day is the climax of the Church Year, the feast of feasts, the king of days. Join in the joyous refrain, "Jesus Christ Is risen today, Alleluia!"
Today, on Easter Sunday, the Festival of the Resurrection of the Lord, we honor those who have been buried by Historic Trinity Lutheran Church since last year's Easter Service. As the Roll Call of a name is read and the cathedral bell is tolled, may we remember those who have died in the Lord. We pray for those who mourn for their loved one, and may they find comfort in the assurance of the resurrection that we shall all join together someday before the victorious throne of God ! (Names listed in today's Sunday Bulletin)
Thanks to all who purchased a Lily Plant in the church for this Easter Sunday. A listing of those who placed lilies, is in today's Sunday Bulletin. You may take the Lily Plant home with you after todays 11:00 a.m. Worship Service.
All children, 12 years and younger, are invited to the Luther Lounge for an Easter Egg Hunt following the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Worship Services. Have you picture taken with the Easter Bunny.
The Historic Trinity offices will be closed this week for the Easter break. If you need assistance call one of the pastors or leave a message on the church answering machine.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BIBLE METAPHOR? Is it Jesus as the " Good Shepherd" or as the "Rock of Ages?" How about "the hills skipped like lambs?" Have you ever seen "floods clap their hands?" Are you literally "the salt of the earth?" How can you tell whether a term in the Bible is to be taken literally, or is a figure of speech? We will be looking at some of the Bible's simile, hyperbole, irony and puns in our Sunday morning Bible study this month, starting on March 30th and continuing on April Sundays. You are invited to attend, in the Conference Room, 9:30a.m.
At various locations throughout the church, you will find a card "A Great Church In A Great City", containing photos about Historic Trinity on one side, and on the other side 1) a copy of an article about our parish by Maureen McDonald from Model-D, or 2) a general description of what Historic Trinity is about. Pass this card on to someone inviting them to attend Historic Trinity.

A Cathedral Church is a strategically located church building in major cities. The Cathedral Church becomes the focal point for its denomination where joint activities, meetings, seminars and special worship services take place. The Cathedral Church is often the "seat" of the denomination presiding officer (bishop or president), and traditionally includes a location for the burial of the faithful (cemetery or columbarium). The parish of the Cathedral Church is metropolitan in outreach. It provides and maintains quality programs, is multi-staffed, has a wide variety of music and worship services, and the finest in architecture and vestments. Special denominational worship services, civic religious activities, and the celebration of special feast days are most commonly held at the Cathedral Church. In the twelfth and thirteenth century the Cathedrals became open places, the focus of city life. They reversed the introverted monastic tradition by becoming extroverted and inclusive, combining the secular and the religious; an open place where solutions to today's problems can be discussed, where religion includes relationships among all living things, and where the Worship Service is the center of all life. The goal of the medieval cathedrals was not merely to preserve tradition, they were to serve as city centers of thriving discourse and festival celebration - a lively place, unafraid of commitment and controversy.
The Cathedral is a symbol of the yearnings of all people in a city. The Cathedral is a source of beauty and pride in the city. Outrageous and orthodox, utopian and savory - the place comes to you all at once, in a great rush of contradiction and paradox. Cathedrals are not overly concerned with what is officially religious and what is not. They should challenge and be challenged, supported by a vigorous appreciation for many ways in which God is revealed. In a secure faith, there should be room for joy and foolishness, as well as piety and moral weight. A church that embraces open-mindedness and glorious diversity. A macro view - the world, the earth, the universe. A Cathedral Church is not self-contained within its facilities. Rather, it reaches out to other city parishes by providing auxiliary staff, support and services. The Cathedral support services strengthen the autonomy of the local parishes by providing ministry the local parish could not normally afford. A Congregation is maintained with the Cathedral facilities as an important part of its ministry of Word and Sacrament. Yet, activities by other local parishes, denominational leadership, and civic organizations are held regularly within the Cathedral as an integral part of the Cathedral Church.

Every Sunday, 8:30-10:45a.m., a coffee hour is held in the Luther Lounge. This gives us an opportunity to have a cup of coffee, tea or juice...a goodie or two... a time to visit with other members and friends, and a chance to warmly welcome visitors. We are so very grateful to all of those who donate coffee cakes, cookies, and other snacks, those who donate money to purchase these items, and those who help set-up coffee hour. Thank you to Roger DeNeen for making sure the coffee is always ready! We also thank those who do the special coffee hours - the Trinity Guild, the Ladies Aid, Corky Marowske for the Valparaiso Guild, and others for special occasions. If you would like to volunteer to help with coffee hour, sign up on the sheet provided on the display board in the Marowske Room. And, remember to put a little something in the donation cans, helping to ensure that this vital ministry will continue!
Historic Trinity offers a large variety of opportunities for involvement by you, your family, your co-workers, and your friends through its many Worship Services, Bible classes, events and activities. There are numerous informational and reservation flyers available to make it easier for you to invite them to join with you at a specific worship service or event . Pick up a flyer and pass it on to someone. Remember - 85% of people attend a church because someone asked them to attend. Research by polling says that one in every four people is just waiting to be invited to church. Other research demonstrates that people need to be with people, and fellowship in a congregation helps to meet that need. Individuals are looking for a church where they can enjoy attending church - Historic Trinity is such a church. Give it a try - ask someone to share in the joy and pride of Historic Trinity.
The Historic Trinity Parish Nurse Council provides important services to our members by the caring and professional nurse volunteers from the Historic Trinity congregation who willingly use their God-given talents in our behalf. These dedicated nurses assist us in being more aware of our health - physically, emotionally and spiritually. The nurses hold various health issue seminars at the church throughout the year. One of the parish nurses is available on the second and fourth Sundays of each month from 9:00a.m. until 11:00a.m. in the Pastor's Study, to take blood pressures and to help answer your health questions. We invite all nurses of the congregation to join the Historic Trinity Parish Nurse Council.

The church office would greatly appreciate it if you would inform them of any update or change in address, home or work phone number, or email address. We do respect your privacy. Thanks! Our ability to contact you, is only as good as the latest information we have on file. Be sure to update us with emergency contact name and phone number information as well.

Since 1850 Historic Trinity has maintained its vigil over downtown Detroit through good times and bad, in periods of brilliance and obscurity, as a living vibrant church held in great esteem by its membership and others who have come to worship within its architecturally - one of a kind - splendid facilities. Each person who steps inside Historic Trinity derives their own satisfaction; whether their purpose is to communicate with the past, give thanks for the present, or to find reasonable hope for the future. Here the young and old, the rich and the poor, urban and suburban, walk together. God comes down to all, as each person reaches up to God. Welcome to Historic Trinity, the Mother Church of Detroit Lutheranism, a downtown church that contributes substantially to the cultural and religious environment of metropolitan Detroit. Make Historic Trinity your church home. And do, "Journey Home to Historic Trinity" often.
A special option at Historic Trinity is that you have the option for church contributions, memorials, tickets to events, or financial gifts large and small, to donate by cash, check, bank draft, bank passport or credit card. Historic Trinity provides you with these optional ways to make it easier for you to make a contribution, or make reservations, or to support the many excellent activities of this dynamic ministry. One of these options is that you are invited to use your credit card. You may select a specific amount for your contribution each month, be it $10.00, $20.00, $100.00, or whatever you desire. This provides you with a simple way to contribute, even to make bonus points, and have an immediate receipt. You may use MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or any Novus Card, and American Express. To make a church contribution by credit card, all you have to do is call Nancy Ivers at the church office 313-567-3100 or 800-268-3058. Let her know how much you wish to donate each week or month to the church, using your credit card. When you want to stop contributing by credit card just let her know. You may also make credit card donations using
our secure server. It’s really easy, and more and more members, and friends of Historic Trinity, are using this credit card option. Another option is to donate appreciated securities. Generally, if you have owned securities for more than one year, not only can you take a charitable deduction base on the fair market value of the securities, but you will
also avoid paying a capital gains tax on the appreciation.

information, call Nancy Ivers at 313-567-3100, or Email Historic
Trinity for additional information.

Check the bulletin board for this month's date that we will be providing a meal for the families who are staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Make your favorite recipes at home, bring them to church on Sunday, and then a handful of us will take it over to the RMHC for lunch after church. That means Historic Trinity could get as much as $300 more from your gift through the "Giving Plus" program. Parking for church services and events is available in the two parking lots adjacent to the church, and for overflow on evenings and weekends in the Brewery Park lots. Please follow directions of the person in the lot, and be sure to obtain a "parking pass" if you park in the Brewery Park parking lots. Do not leave your car parked in the parking lot after church services or an event, the gates will be locked. If you are parked in the Brewery Park section and plan to attend something at the church after the 11:00 a.m. Worship Service, please move your car to the Historic Trinity lot first.
Historic Trinity has an "ID" sticker for your car windshield. Place the sticker in the lower left hand corner (drivers side) of the window. Those automobiles that display an HT windshield sticker will not need a parking pass to the lots adjacent to the church. You will still need to enter the lots from the gate in the church's parking lot. If you do not have a HT sticker you will need a parking pass from the security person. Stickers can be obtained from the security person in the parking lot, or from the church office.
For over 35 years, Fort Street Presbyterian (631 West Fort Street Detroit, MI 48226) has run the Open Door Ministry, serving a meal each week to over 400 individuals (21,000 annually) who are homeless or cannot afford food. An additional opportunity by which you can support Historic Trinity is through Project 12 Baskets that provides an on line market where you can donate items to be auctioned to interested buyers. Historic Trinity will receive 70% of the revenue from the sale of your item. Project 12 Baskets draws its name from the Bible event of the feeding of the 5000. The Lord took 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish to feed 5000, and when he was done there was an excess to fill 12 baskets to the top. We all have some excess in our basements, attics, and closets. Donate those items you no longer use: cameras, power tools, antiques, dolls, sporting goods, jewelry, musical instruments--even cars! Project 12 Baskets helps you to turn your gifted leftovers into additional revenue for your church. For more information of Project 12 Baskets or the donating process, visit their website or contact Lauren Kuppe at 586-634-9991 or lkuppe@project12baskets.com, orr talk to Marion Tokarchuk in the church office.

The funds can be an up-front gift, or a pledge over three years. Your donations to the Transition Fund will ensure stability to this process.
