PASCHAL CANDLE

Since the 5th Century, the Paschal Candle has been used in the Church from Easter Sunday to Ascension Day. The Paschal Candle is lit for all Worship Services, during these 40 days, as a symbol of the Resurrection. The rest of the year, the candle stands beside the Baptismal Font. The Paschal Candle is lit for each Baptism and placed by the casket of each Burial, reminding us we are baptized and buried into Christ our Risen Lord. Paschal means "pertaining to the Passover," or in the Christian Church "Easter".

We reported wrong in last Sunday's Bulletin and the latest Newsletter that Stephen DeMik had accepted the Call as an Associate Pastor here at Historic Trinity. He going to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Covington, Louisiana, just north of New Orleans. We will continue the process of finding an Associate Pastor to assist Dr. Eberhard. We will keep you informed.

CATHEDRAL MINISTRY FUND

With Vicar Stephen DeMik going to Louisiana, it makes the development of "The Cathedral Ministry Fund" even more necessary in our search for an Associate Pastor for Historic Trinity Lutheran Church, and to retain The Rev Dr David Eberhard as head pastor. This fund will assure that there will be sufficient funds available to support both the Associate Pastor and Dr. Eberhard for the near future. Our goal is to establish a fund of $500,000 by 2010. This will require some major donations, and lots of donations in any amount ($10, $25, $50, $100, $1000, plus), over and above your regular giving. Everyone can help in making this goal a reality. The funds can be an upfront gift, or a pledge over three years. Your donations to the Cathedral Ministry Fund will ensure stability in our ministry.

HISTORIC TRINITY - CATHEDRAL MINISTRY

Each major city in the world usually contains at least one cathedral. This unique niche ministry has stood the time thru many centuries. Historic Trinity is our Lutheran Cathedral in downtown Detroit. As a Cathedral Church it is a source of beauty and pride for the city, outrageous and orthodox, utopian and savvy - the place comes to you all at once, in a great rush of contradiction and paradox. A place of holy awe! The cathedral church speaks in the quietude of holy sanctuaries, in the golden shout of the mighty organ raining down, in the stories of Christian history captured in stained glass and wood and stone carving. It educates and uplifts, using pageantry and drama, choral music and concerts, dance and sounding bells. Everywhere it provides beauty. As important as the cathedral church building is, the Cathedral Ministry consists not of the building's appearance - but in how the ministry is conducted. The Historic Trinity Cathedral Ministry is more than its own parishioners, more than a membership club. Such a ministry has a vital, committed parish membership at its core, nurtured by solid pastoral care. The Cathedral Church belongs to more than its members. The Cathedral ministry belongs to all who are encouraged to claim it as theirs, to use it on occasion, to return to it anytime, and to bring their children there to see their historic roots. The Cathedral Ministry also finds purpose in reaching out to the unchurched. Reaching far beyond the four walls of the cathedral building and beyond the four lines that mark the property border. A Cathedral Ministry serves a far wider sphere of people- this is this our joy, our privilege and our responsibility.

Historic Trinity CATHEDRAL
is an ecclesiastical, cultural, community
RESOURCE and GATHERING PLACE
for all of Metro Detroit.

COFFEE & CONVERSATION HOUR

Every Sunday, 8:30-10:45a.m., a coffee hour is held in the Luther Lounge. This gives us an opportunity to have a cup of coffee, tea or juice...a goodie or two... a time to visit with other members and friends, and a chance to warmly welcome visitors. We are so very grateful to all of those who donate coffee cakes, cookies, and other snacks, those who donate money to purchase these items, and those who help set-up coffee hour. Thank you to Roger DeNeen for making sure the coffee is always ready! We also thank those who do the special coffee hours - the Trinity Guild, the Ladies Aid, Corky Marowske for the Valparaiso Guild, and others for special occasions. If you would like to volunteer to help with coffee hour, sign up on the sheet provided on the display board in the Marowske Room. And, remember to put a little something in the donation cans, helping to ensure that this vital ministry will continue!

INVITE OTHERS

Historic Trinity offers a large variety of opportunities for involvement by you, your family, your co-workers, and your friends through its many Worship Services, Bible classes, events and activities. There are numerous informational and reservation flyers available to make it easier for you to invite them to join with you at a specific worship service or event . Pick up a flyer and pass it on to someone. Remember - 85% of people attend a church because someone asked them to attend. Research by polling says that one in every four people is just waiting to be invited to church. Other research demonstrates that people need to be with people, and fellowship in a congregation helps to meet that need. Individuals are looking for a church where they can enjoy attending church - Historic Trinity is such a church. Give it a try - ask someone to share in the joy and pride of Historic Trinity.

PARISH NURSE - Second and Fourth Sundays

The Historic Trinity Parish Nurse Council provides important services to our members by the caring and professional nurse volunteers from the Historic Trinity congregation who willingly use their God-given talents in our behalf. These dedicated nurses assist us in being more aware of our health - physically, emotionally and spiritually. The nurses hold various health issue seminars at the church throughout the year. One of the parish nurses is available on the second and fourth Sundays of each month from 9:00a.m. until 11:00a.m. in the Pastor's Study, to take blood pressures and to help answer your health questions. We invite all nurses of the congregation to join the Historic Trinity Parish Nurse Council.

HISTORIC TRINITY

Since 1850 Historic Trinity has maintained its vigil over downtown Detroit through good times and bad, in periods of brilliance and obscurity, as a living vibrant church held in great esteem by its membership and others who have come to worship within its architecturally - one of a kind - splendid facilities. Each person who steps inside Historic Trinity derives their own satisfaction; whether their purpose is to communicate with the past, give thanks for the present, or to find reasonable hope for the future. Here the young and old, the rich and the poor, urban and suburban, walk together. God comes down to all, as each person reaches up to God. Welcome to Historic Trinity, the Mother Church of Detroit Lutheranism, a downtown church that contributes substantially to the cultural and religious environment of metropolitan Detroit. Make Historic Trinity your church home. And do, "Journey Home to Historic Trinity" often.

GIVING OPTIONS - CREDIT CARD

A special option at Historic Trinity is that you have the option for church contributions, memorials, tickets to events, or financial gifts large and small, to donate by cash, check, bank draft, bank passport or credit card. Historic Trinity provides you with these optional ways to make it easier for you to make a contribution, or make reservations, or to support the many excellent activities of this dynamic ministry. One of these options is that you are invited to use your credit card. You may select a specific amount for your contribution each month, be it $10.00, $20.00, $100.00, or whatever you desire. This provides you with a simple way to contribute, even to make bonus points, and have an immediate receipt. You may use MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or any Novus Card, and American Express. To make a church contribution by credit card, all you have to do is call Nancy Ivers at the church office 313-567-3100 or 800-268-3058. Let her know how much you wish to donate each week or month to the church, using your credit card. When you want to stop contributing by credit card just let her know. You may also make credit card donations using our secure server. It’s really easy, and more and more members, and friends of Historic Trinity, are using this credit card option. Another option is to donate appreciated securities. Generally, if you have owned securities for more than one year, not only can you take a charitable deduction base on the fair market value of the securities, but you will also avoid paying a capital gains tax on the appreciation.

USE YOUR CREDIT CARD TO MAKE RESERVATIONS USING THE ABOVE LINK AS WELL.

For more information, call Nancy Ivers at 313-567-3100, or Email Historic Trinity.

This is your last chance to serve at the Ronald McDonald House before the summer break - please sign up to serve on May 11 or June 8, on the bulletin board in the Marowske Room.

CHURCH PARKING

Parking for church services and events is available in the two parking lots adjacent to the church, and for overflow on evenings and weekends in the Brewery Park lots. Please follow directions of the person in the lot, and be sure to obtain a "parking pass" if you park in the Brewery Park parking lots. CAR PARKING "ID"

Historic Trinity has an "ID" sticker for your car windshield. Place the sticker in the lower left hand corner (drivers side) of the window. Those automobiles that display an HT windshield sticker will not need a parking pass to the lots adjacent to the church. You will still need to enter the lots from the gate in the church's parking lot. If you do not have a HT sticker you will need a parking pass from the security person. Stickers can be obtained from the security person in the parking lot, or from the church office.

GO GREEN - "SHARE THE RIDE"

With the rising cost of gasoline and the many Detroit freeway detours, consider "Share The Ride" with a fellow member. Review the membership list (copies available in the church office) and see if there might be someone with whom you could share a ride to church services. Talk to Peter Groezinger if you're willing to provide a ride, or if you need a ride to church services.
